Where we're at now
Charlie’s gone. Ianello will run the team for now.
Stoops has apparently said no, but you can parse through his wording for yourself: http://newsok.com/bob-stoops-im-going-to-be-in-oklahoma-next-year/article/3421502
There's a report from an Oklahoma radio station
that ND offered Stoops 8 years and $24 million. Stoops already makes $3.7 million a year plus incentives. No way ND would offer him less money than he’s currently getting.
Don’t believe this garbage.
One of the dumber sentences you'll read
“Jimmy Clausen was seen giving his football helmet to his familly following a 45-38 loss to Stanford in which he threw five touchdown passes, a strong indication he will declare for the NFL draft.”
From the New York Daily News.
ESPN insider article
Says someone threw out the name Butch Davis… Whoever that was I swear they stole that from me, though now I think that wouldn’t be the best move…
Also why does a coach have to be linked to a school for it to be a fit. I dont get why its such a bad thing to go outside of your comfort zone. I get that there are ridiculous demands at ND, and that it helps. But plenty of coaches go to schools with no history and succeed.

Why? Because this:
http://www.southbendtribune.com/article/20091122/Opinion/911220476/1064/Opinion
Coach with a history of success as a head coach at the collegiate level: Win
Everyone else: Fail
He has done well at North Carolina...
I kinda expected him to do a little better in a week football conference.

I think this is reporting the same thing as before?

BREAKING NEWS!
From Bob Stoops:
“I intend to be at Team Edward. Yes, that’s what I intend to do,” the Sooner coach said when specifically asked about the Team Jacob rumors. “I will never confirm or deny whether I talk or not talk to anybody, and I won’t be switching just because Jacob is a sexy, ethnic werewolf.”
Asked for a little more clarity, Stoops said: "What I’m saying is I’m going to be on Team Edward next year, at least until “Eclipse” comes out next fall."
But Taylor Lautner is hosting SNL...
….so I think that’s a sign he’s going to switch teams?! Even if the CGI is bad, if you’re a werewolf hosting SNL, that’s pretty good.

Swarbrick presser in an hour
and I’m reading in various unreliable places that the players voted for no bowl game.
Really nice Dan Wetzel column
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=dw-weisout113009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
No coaching rumors or anything, but a nice read as everyone slowly rocks back and forth while hitting F5.
http://www.rakesofmallow.com
Nice trick on the F5, didn’t know about that one. That is a nice column. I love the beginning. Doesn’t the fact that everyone is talking about this make Notre Dame an elite place to coach? Was Alabama still an elite place to coach when Nick Saban decided to leave the NFL to return to college football? This argument that ND is not an elite program is contradictary. If it wasn’t, then no one would be talking about it, expect for all of us poor fools of course….
B-B-B-Byrd Byrd Byrd, Byrd is the Wyrd!"
From the presser
Swarbrick says this wasn’t a foregone conclusion because of how hard Weis worked
Swarbrick says that no coach has been contacted
Everyone else says either Stoops is a done deal or will never coach at ND.
Welp, those are all three possible options.
Say Stoops is out
Kelly is probably the next pick. But, I am not sold on him running a big time program. Cincy can’t even pick up ND’s jock strap in terms of money and expectations. I know he is the flashy pick but Notre Dame needs a defensive, take no crap, hard nosed coach. One who make them recruits tough not just talk about it. Which is what Stoops would do but it doesn’t sound good for ND getting to him to sign.
Kelly has never
beaten a Top 20 football team. Ever.
The guy is a risky choice.
"I think it's safe to say our concerns are many." -- Kirk Ferentz
Its difficult to beat top 20 teams at historically mediocre schools.
Scheme only goes so far in college football when you can win on talent. USC runs very vanilla systems, they just dominate other teams athletically.

How do you explain Iowa then?
who has beaten a Top 10 team in each of the last two years. Are they loaded with talent? Last I checked, Iowa has averaged around a #30 ranking in recruting the last 10 years, with the exception of two years when they were Top 10. Beating a Top 20 team should not be impossible for a good coach. A Top 10 team? Yeah, only the really good coaches like Ferentz does that. But Top 20? Most teams ranked in the back half of the Top 20 are overrated to begin with.
He’s a major risk if you ask me. He could be the next great coach, or he could be the next Dan Hawkins.

I dont think thats quite fair...
What was Ferentz record at Iowa his first 4 or 5 years and compare that to what Brian Kelly has done so far. And without checking Im sure Ferentz inherited a better team than Brian Kelly… Besides its probably all gonna be moot if Adam Shefter is to be believed.

Ferentz inherited a 3-8 team
went 1-10 in his first year cleaning it out and then two years later was in the Orange Bowl at 11-2, ranked 3rd in the nation. National Coach of the Year. Turned a wide out in the Heisman runner up at QB. Anyway, good luck as it sounds like Butch Davis is going to be your new guy.

Sources?
Ive seen the rumor, but nothing substantial. Butch Davis is a big name, and he definitely has rebuilt programs. I wouldn’t hate this hire.

It's an educated guess...
there isn’t a lot out there. Patterson was the guy I would have hired. Work horse, defensive genius. Low key and good recruiter. But, he signed a 50 year contract today or something. Who’s left?
The pro guys have all said no and they are not game players.
Meyer said no.
Stoops said no.
Ferentz will say no.
Correction…Brian Billick did not say no. You don’t want him. He makes Weis look humble.
There are the Mormon guys…the coach at Boise, Utah or BYU. I don’t see any of them fitting in (if you get my drift).
There is Bud Foster, the defensive coordinator from Va. Tech (see how Michigan is doing with a Virginia-ish guy…talk about culture clash).
My best guess is…Butch David or maybe Greg Shiano (at Rutgers)
Dark Horse….Jeff Tedford of Cal. Everyone is talking Riley from Oregon State but I think Tedford is more likely. He understands high academics and is young. But, he is an offensive guy.
There is a super dark horse out there….Brian VanGorder. He is the Defensive Coordinator for the Falcons and was a head coach at Ga. Southern. Won Broyles award a few years back. He is the defensive version of Weis though…a pro guy with no real HC experience.
"I think it's safe to say our concerns are many." -- Kirk Ferentz
Yeah that was pretty much my thoughts to...
It was just the way you said it made me think you had read something I didn’t, I spent a good 30 minutes trying to find where it said he was a “lock.” But for the most part I pretty much agree with your list, I dont like Bilick at all. The one guy who I’m not sold on being out is Harbaugh, yeah he signed an extension but I think it was just a way to get a buyout money out of ND if the come calling.
I must say that I threw out the name Butch Davis a while ago, I guess I wasn’t the first person, but I hadn’t read it anywhere else at the time, talked myself out of it, then retalked myself into it last night doing all the reading on him. I really think he is going to be the guy, and might actually be a little disappointed if anyone else gets it.

irisheyes
this is what irisheyes from scout.com says about stoops coming to notre dame “there is a lot of fire here, not just smoke” and the sources are “from the Oklahoma side, to the Notre Dame side and to neutral parties” . And supposedly kelly is not an option anymore because of “direct and indirect involvement with both Gary Hart (while he was a student at Assumption) and John Kerry during campaigns”
"I definitely lead the league in weird injuries. I'm embarrassed, really. Somebody asks you why you came out and you say, 'Um, I was dizzy.' And then they ask you again and you say, 'I think I got something in my eye.' I'd much rather be run over, that's more manly." -- C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, on the pair of strange injuries (dizziness, eye irritation) that have forced him to miss time this season.
Hmmm,
Ypo posted: " And supposedly kelly is not an option anymore because of "direct and indirect involvement with both Gary Hart (while he was a student at Assumption) and John Kerry during campaigns""
You actually think this matters?

That would be a very interesting hire!
Imagine Bobby Bowden walking the sidelines of Notre Dame. I just can’t picture him in anything but a Seminole hat. I wonder if he will coach again? He has 388 victories I would think he would like to get to 400. He could do that in at least 2 years somewhere.
I dunno...
He’s what 80? I dont think the has it in him anymore.

Can you say....
time to rebuild the program?? I really don’t want to see ND throw a butt-load of money and a bunch of years at some pseudo-marquee name. It hasn’t worked, and it won’t work going forward.
It’ll never happen, but I’d like to see them bring in a young guy who can build this program from the ground up. Brian Kelly’s not a bad option- he’s been a winner wherever he’s been- but they are still going to have offer him way more money than he may be worth.
The bottom line is- whoever they hire- don’t offer a friggin’ 20-year extension at the first sign of some sort of success. We may be in for some more darkness before the sun rises over Touchdown Jesus again.
Might as well pay them with the gold that paints the dome.
