New here so this is my first post

I heart Manti Te’o the guy had a solid game today, I don’t know how many tackles he was in on but it seemed like it was a ton, and he made a couple of plays like Mayock said that maybe he never got the tackle on but he stopped the play from developing. Overall I liked the defense and the run game, which was strange because going into the season I didn’t see those as big strengths.

interesting

my analysis is as follows. offense ok; defense less ok

by brian custer on Sep 4, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably just based on the expectations we had

Mine were that the defense would be bad, based on how horrid it was last season, and they surprised me pleasantly. After watching Clausen and Co sling it around I expected similar from this offense (especially with Kelly’s spread) but was disappointed there, and surprised pleasantly again by the running game.

The defense was solid except for a quarter and a half stretch

My feeling

is that the defense will be better than anticipated and the offense not as prolific as predicted. The big guys (Crist, Te’o, etc.) looked good but we made too many simple mistakes (outside contain, fumbles, tackling). I think Kelly will take this as a solid first step and build from it but we can’t make the same mistake against an apparently much improved Michigan team.

Crist makes me nervous. He had some passes that weren't terribly difficult he just completely missed.

On the flip side, Cierre Wood looked fantastic. If you discount the -5 yard rush he had on his 3rd carry (which was a loss due to play design), he had 6 carries for 63 yards. For the math impaired, that’s 10.5 yards a carry. Yikes! My only question is why the heck wasn’t he getting the ball more?

Agree w/ Crist

It seemed every time there was a slight rush he would panic, freeze and curl up in a ball. If he didn’t curl up he would run smack dab into an opposing player. I think it may take a few games for the offense to warm up and get going with timing and just general experience.

I was impressed with the defense. When Purdue did drive there were no big plays, they had to fight and earn every bit of it and it took a lot of time for them to go down the field. Plus our D made big plays today, which has been missing for a few years – there were several important sacks and some forced fumbles in dire times. Impressed overall, but I think we will get better over the next 3-5 weeks before hitting our stride.

Impressed by your D today

Good job, fellas. See you in West Lafayette next year.

Anybody that quotes "Thunder Road" is alright by me.

The defense looked better than they did last year, for sure. I thought they got to the ball quickly, and I was impressed with how well the cornerbacks came down to meet the ballcarrier on Purdue’s outside runs. Gray especially, did a really nice job.

On the other hand, Crist will definitely need to improve. He just doesn’t have enough touch on his deep passes right now. Those two shots to Floyd in the end zone in the fourth quarter should have been much better passes.

All in all, though, a good first win. Hopefully, they kick the living shit out of Michigan next week.

No such thing as a bad win

but they had better play a lot better next week. Rodriguez has his own guys playing now and UM is on the road back. They pounded UConn while ND got by probable Big 10 doormat Purdue.

Outside looking in:

Purdue has no running game and an inexperienced, leaky offensive line. Our defense (with the exception of Kerrigan) is not a huge force. That showed in the first half especially, with Purdue going nowhere fast. Down 10 at the half, the Irish eked out a 10-9 second half win, while Purdue shot itself in the foot repeatedly on offense.

Indeed, the luck of the Irish was with you on Saturday. Purdue is no doormat, but they aren’t the 2010 equivalent to Iowa – and probably not Michigan this year.

That said, yesterday’s win wasn’t overwhelming by any stretch of the imagination. It was just “less close” than last year.

"Luck" had nothing to do with it

Notre Dame was in control the entire game, and four yards away from landing the knockout blow in the third. as much as this game could’ve been a lot closer, it also could’ve been a complete laugher.

give credit to Purdue for coming back, but to chalk up this loss solely to their own mistakes isn’t doing ND justice. the Irish defense kept everything in front of them, were terrific from a tackling standpoint, and the Special Teams were much better than Purdue’s.

LOL

Love the moniker “Anthony Masons Haircut”…….brilliant ! Remember those Pacer-Knicks matchups when Reggie was here. Miss those days too !

Anyhow, I guess it read wrong for you. No doubt who the better team was on this Saturday. However, the gap was much closer, especially considering this HUGE difference everyone mentions in recruiting / talent on paper. If you go on that basis alone, it should’ve been 49-3. But it wasn’t, and we can’t totally chalk it up to a dismal performance for Notre Dame.

And the “knockout blow” never came. Rather, some Purdue counter-punches were delivered and forced you to nearly the final round.

The “luck” portion I mention mainly comes in the form of having this particular Purdue team nearly deplete of in-game experience. I believe it was the first start/collegiate action for 20 of the players. Perhaps ND had a similiar amount of first-time players, but then we would default back to the “better talent” comes to ND each year, right?

You can call it whatever you like, but I believe “luck” fits in there somewhere. Or perhaps “timing” would be a better way to say it – but even that has a bit of “luck” attached to it, no?

One additional note: ST’s always seems to be a problem with Purdue….no surprise there.

Cheers !

One More Thing...

…. I thought your defensive team speed was much, much more apparent than it has been in recent years. Seemed like there were 13 defensive players out there at times, while my Boilers looked to be fielding about 8 defenders at times !
